Thoughts from an Entertainer

I love to think at this time of night, it keeps me focused and helps put things into perspective. As I was about to begin my show at La Maison in NO Saturday night, Dee-1 made a very interesting comment in our prayer, “that we do what we are here to do… to entertain.” I’ve never thought about being an “entertainer”, but as I thought about it, it’s one of the coolest callings to have. Of course ministry will forever supersede my music any day, music is apart of my ministry which I thank God everyday for the opportunity to do what I do. As I was laying down I thought about how much responsibility an entertainer has, how much accountability that they need. I love to simplify things to their basic form, in simplicity, people pay money to be entertained, even more importantly they spend their most valuable commodity..time! Time is something that you will never get back, so for me, if someone spends time at my show or with me…that is such an honor. Someone thinks highly enough of me to want to spend their precious time with me or at my show. When thinking from this perspective I am so grateful for all who have done so. Thinking this way reminds me of my responsibility, especially during a show, is to give u your money’s worth and even more…your time’s worth! I saw this bass player play once, he was one of the stiffest guys I’ve ever seen. I thought to myself, “would I pay to see this guy play? No!” Be not only audibly attractive but visually as well. I also thought about the influence that comes with the job. For a short period of time during a show ur band or group is literally the center of attention, all eyes are looking your direction, all ears are poised to hear your sound. You now have an opportunity to influence others. I make sure that every time I have that opportunity I influence and make an impression positively hoping to invoke a change for the better. The power of music is undeniable, my goal is to use that power positively to uplift anyone who will listen. Music invokes emotions which produce your thoughts…if I can change your thoughts I can change your life for the better! Music with a message…the beauty of entertainment.

Invest Time...Give Back

I was thinking today as I was returning from Romeville Elementary after I performed with D. Montrell and my bro Thurman Thomas. This is not an unusual occurrence since we frequently visit schools to talk to kids about making smart decisions and we’ll perform some of Montrell’s songs for them. As this being my blog, I can write about ANYTHING that I want to, so I’d like to write about giving back and sowing time into the lives of others. Time is the most precious commodity that we have. I don’t think we really appreciate the TIME that we spend with others and how crucially important that is. Even as something as basic as going out to lunch someone, if you think about it, you actually sacrifice your most precious commodity to spend it with someone else. I’d like to encourage others around me to continue to invest the time into the people that are worthy of their time. I love visiting the kids because during that time, their moldable minds are most susceptible to inspiration at that age. Instead of sowing the perversions found in mass media, we sow love. It broke my heart to hear that only 11 kids passed their iLeap exam. This pushes me even more to want to make a difference in the lives of the ones around me. God has given us our own special talents and gifts, the BEST thing that you can do with that is to use it to positively influence the lives of others. Bottom line, if you’re not giving back…what are you doing? Invest your precious time because in return you’ll reap the rewards!

I’ve been told that I ask a lot of questions…why not? People who don’t ask questions are either fools, or they’re afraid of the answer. The answer to your questions forces you to have no excuse. Ignorance is an excuse, but when knowledge comes, it replaces ignorance. Sadly, most would like to be ignorant…but not me!
